Resources for enriching STEM activities and events. Welcome to Summer 2020!Hello from the Office of Science Outreach at Penn State University! This summer, we plan to share some fun and educational science resources in bi-weekly newsletters. This is the first of our summer series! Each newsletter will include activities that can be done at home (with adult supervision), links to various science challenges, games or scavenger hunts, as well as opportunities for you to share your scientific inclinations and observations! We hope that you and your family will spend some time together discovering the endless possibilities of science! We’re looking forward to a safe and science-filled summer! Experiment at homeThe Center for Nanoscale Science at Penn State, a sponsor of our high school Science-U camp - Make It Matter, has released a new website in partnership with The Franklin Institute that is filled with fun DIY-at-home experiments and videos about materials science. Click the link below and learn something new about materials science - the study of stuff! Strawberry DNADNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the building block of life, but usually it is very difficult to see without special equipment! However, using supplies purchased at retail stores, families can extract this special molecule from fruit such as strawberries. This favorite Science Outreach activity can be done in your kitchen with the instructions and video from WPSU's Science-U@Home. Nature Bingo GameTry this fun outside activity to practice scientific observation. Explore your backyard or a park and see how many natural resources you can find! This game might be familiar to campers who have attended our Nature's Explorers camps in the past. Feel free to download a printable copy here or create your own. Make this game a friendly competition or reward everyone participating for their observational skills! What is Science Outreach? The Office of Science Outreach within the Eberly College of Science at Penn State directs several programs and events each year. Our mission is to connect science faculty with students, teachers, and community members. We are sending this email to you because of your child's or your own participation or interest in one of our outreach programs. We want to hear from you!Email us at outreach@science.psu.edu
